Red Flame Tree

Like the complex root system of a tree, sending signals to each other and their environment, we are all linked to a long lineage who made this life possible. The blood of the women who carried us, who died for us, stand strong in the roots of our family tree. Image printed on cotton embroidered with cotton. The frame is comprised of hundreds of hand woven agave ropes with red cotton. Which was interwoven over the course of a month. Many many hours of energy was transmitted into this piece.

The image making process was also a multi step process of weaving and wrapping the hair of my subject over the course of 6 hours. Then I attached and suspended her hair and dress to the tree. From composing the photograph and scene to physically building a frame and structure for the network of red woven agave ropes weaving them like the roots of a tree allowing the photograph to transcend from the two dimensional to the three dimensional.

Layers on layers - process on process - interwoven into each other.
